Fast-rotation wood for bioenergy

Short rotation coppice (SRC) is an agricultural production of fast-growing woody crops such as willow and poplar. Two years after planting, the wood can be harvested for the first time using standard agricultural machinery. After the harvest, the plants will sprout again and can then be harvested periodically up to ten times again.

In addition to extra biomass, SRC is used for shelter, biodiversity, carbon storage, agro-forestry systems, as a separation between conventional and bio-agricultural crops or as a buffer s area with watercourses preventing nitrate leaching, for soil regeneration (remediation of soil compaction and erosion) and for the remediation of contaminated soil (phytoremediation).

In March 2021, we planted our first own green buffer on half a hectare of residual land in the industrial area behind our company building with willow hedges. Exactly 2 years later, we could proudly harvest our first pruning. Meanwhile, we planted last year a second area of half a hectare.

The fast rotation wood provides extra biomass on the one hand and promotes fauna and flora on the other. Biosynergy was honourably mentioned by the New C-Land Consortium as a "leading example" regarding valorisation of residual land.

The biomass from these fast rotation crops is used to run our own installation in combination with the wood (waste) streams from the surrounding wood processing industry.
